West Los Angeles’s name may confuse some people as the neighborhood does not occupy the westernmost part of the city. In fact, where its western border lies is somewhat muddled even for locals. Some say the neighborhood ends a few blocks east of where Sawtelle begins. Others contend it encompasses Sawtelle and ends at Centinela Avenue just outside the Santa Monica city limits. Regardless of its actual western border, West LA has developed a unique character that distinguishes it from the rest of LA.

The neighborhood is home to approximately 14,300 residents and ranks third in Niche.com’s list of the “Best Neighborhoods to Live in Los Angeles”. West LA is a rectangular patch of residential streets bisected by the Pico and Santa Monica Boulevards, as well as by three interstate highways. The neighborhood has diminished in size through the years because of residential and commercial developments, but it doesn’t fall short when it comes to nightlife and diversity.

Residents and visitors get to dine in a myriad of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. Perhaps West LA’s most iconic restaurant is The Apple Pan. Since it opened its doors in 1947, The Apple Pan continues to fill hungry tummies with tasty apple pies and hamburgers, as well as their signature banana cream pie and vanilla ice cream.

Shoppers will have a grand time in Westfield Century City, an outdoor mall that houses several high-end stores. Conversely, Trove is perfect for those looking for bargains in fashion and vintage items. Sawtelle Japantown is known for its collection of Japanese and other Asian restaurants and specialty shops.

For those who love the outdoors, a trip to the Santa Monica Pier and Beach is a must. The beach scene here is one of the most famous across the United States with its three miles of shoreline, world-famous amusement park, and the 22-mile “The Strand” bike path.

Kids can attend top-rated public and private schools in the area, including Renaissance Arts Academy, Girls Academic Leadership Academy, Harvard-Westlake School, and Marlborough School, to name a few.

The housing market in West LA continues to see an appreciation over the years. Condos make up the majority of the housing stock, but you will also find an abundance of new construction single-family homes as well as older homes with the quintessential California charm.
